Severn Glocon Group’s laser scanning division, Quantapoint Europe, has successfully completed a 3D laser scanning project for a large oil refinery in Thailand. 2nd June 2010

The refinery required significant modifications to several operating units in order to comply with clean fuels regulations. Quantapoint Europe was selected to provide detailed models of the facility direct to the desktops of designers working on the job. Speed and accuracy were crucial due to the tight timeframe of the project and the global spread of the design teams.

3D Laser Models were used for both preliminary front-end engineering design (FEED) and detailed engineering design. Quantapoint Europe equipped designers in Thailand, the UK, India and the US with Prism 3D viewing software and QuantaCAD software, which integrates with other computer aided design (CAD) packages.

Benefits included the avoidance of costly and time-consuming remodeling, reduced need for repeat field-trips and the ability to conduct virtual ‘clash checks’ ensuring new designs and pipe-routes would fit the lay-out of the facility.

During the course of the project, Quantapoint Europe scanned eight units within the refinery and generated almost 1,000 laser scanned images in a fraction of the time it would have taken with traditional methods.
