Joint venture set to save project managers money and man hours

05 November 2007

Severn Project Services, a division of the £40 million engineering company Severn Glocon Group PLC, has announced its joint venture with Quantapoint, Inc. the world’s leading provider of laser scanning technology and services that help companies achieve Zero-Defect Projects™.

Zero-Defect Projects™ is the name given to the technology and service provided by Severn-Quantapoint which enables project managers to see a complete three dimensional image of the facility they are dealing with and plan project designs accordingly.

Much of the current scanning technology on the market works by a camera producing an array of shots which are pieced together two dimensionally in a CAD package. These images, known as ‘point clouds’ are often unclear and have missing pieces of information.

The new Zero-Defect Projects™ scanning technology from Severn-Quantapoint, which is the first of its kind available in the UK, enables project managers to quickly get an interactive 3D laser model of an area.

By using this technology when looking to add a new piece of equipment or modify an existing plant, project managers can almost slice down the centre of the plant, enabling them to see existing pipe work which is not visible to the naked eye. By being able to work around existing structures, a project manager can ensure that any new equipment ordered will fit before it arrives on site.

The Zero-Defect Projects™ technology has already shown impressive statistics, including 95 per cent fewer design issues and 98 per cent fewer fit up issues, helping project managers save millions of pounds and thousands of man-hours on projects. “Companies that are currently laser scanning in the UK produce ‘point clouds’, whose sparse measurements make it difficult to clearly visualise the project and thus more likely to miss important design details. We provide Laser Models™, which integrate laser data to create high-definition solid ‘models’ of the facility that are visually clear and include fine details,” commented James McGill, Vice President of Marketing, Quantapoint, Inc.

Continued James, “Laser Models™ can be accessed within packages such as AutoCAD, PDMS, PDS and SmartPlant Review and have helped companies increase their design efficiency by 60 per cent and decrease design clashes by 85 per cent.”

Added Colin Findlay, director, Severn Project Services; “Quantapoint are well known within the oil and gas market for industry-leading laser scanning technology and services.  By eliminating project flaws such as clashes, clients have beaten project schedules and budgets by 15 per cent or more, with a greater than 1,000 per cent return on investment. We are sure that this collaboration will herald significant results for clients in the North Sea arena in 2008.”

Severn-Quantapoint provides laser scanning technology, analysis, quality control and decision support services to reduce potential errors from across the project lifecycle.

Severn Project Services specialises in mechanical design and project engineering, operating mainly in the Oil, Gas and Nuclear Power Generation markets, with particular expertise in flow control technologies.
